Having advertised privately with no serious inquiries, I contacted Franchise Resales to promote the sale of Minster South Wales. While it took some time for interest to be generated, I am confident that the business was getting good exposure in the press, on line and at shows. My husband and I purchased a ServiceMaster franchise in daily office cleaning in September 1991. We built it up over a 23 year period to a turnover of approximately one million pounds and decided it was time to retire. Although I’ve owned my own business before I had never purchased a business. What was the process? Where should I start? Eventually we found the business we were really interested in, it was a Rainbow International franchise. Once we made the decision to go for a franchise our research led us to the Franchise Resales website. Franchise Resales were extremely helpful with offering advice on the general process, but without pushing in any way – leaving us to make an informed decision.
At all times they were available to answer any of the seemingly stupid questions – reassuring us that they weren’t stupid, that anyone purchasing a business tends to have the same questions. It was also great to know that at the times when I didn’t want ‘the perfect answer’ from the franchise, I could check that I was actually getting the ‘real answer’ from Franchise Resales. Their professionalism and knowledge make them well worth talking to, we highly recommend them.
Once Anita and I had decided to sell we initially approached our franchisor to guide us through the sales process. They did provide some documentation and advertised the business on their website which produced a prospective purchaser but they didn’t proceed. We were aware of Franchise Resales because they had successfully managed the sales of several of my fellow franchisees and naturally we had discussed their experience going through the exit process.
Anita and I met Derrick in August and were impressed with his understanding both of our franchises business and the people involved at head office. He explained how Franchise Resales try to manage all the parties involved in a transparent way and this openness and clarity was something that ensured our eventual sale went through. From signing up in August and working with Derrick to prepare the documentation and advertising we had two prospects almost immediately with our eventual purchaser being introduced in March this year. The process moved swiftly and smoothly. Franchise Resales organised the approval process for him, managed the negotiations process between us, assisted him with his funding and introduced solicitors to both the purchaser and us to sort out the legal process.
From meeting the purchaser initially to moving out of the business took only three months and the whole sale from signing up with Franchise Resales to completion was just 10 months. We are very happy with the way the process was handled by Franchise Resales and would not hesitate to recommend their services to any franchisee wishing to sell. We didn’t even mind paying their fee – the service was worth it.
I had been looking for a business for a while since selling my previous IT business and subsequently operating a consultancy business. I found the business advertised on a commercial business sales website, applied for more information and was contacted almost immediately by Julie from Franchise Resales who arranged for me to sign a non-disclosure agreement and then passed me to the account manager who discussed the opportunity with me.
The documentation Franchise Resales provided was very detailed and descriptive which together with the supporting accounts information enabled me to make the decision to explore the business further. They arranged an initial meeting for me with the current franchisees and arranged for me to meet with the team at Head Office for an approval meeting. We had agreed a tight timetable to get the sale complete which required us all driving to get this achieved. Franchise Resales were with us all the way, proposing a selection of Solicitors for the seller and me to choose from and they involved the franchise team at the bank to ensure the transaction went swiftly – as it did.
Whilst I was aware that Franchise Resales were being paid by the sellers to complete the sale for them, at no time did I ever feel pushed or that they had anything but my best interests at heart. There was good background knowledge of the franchisors operation and also guidance on the nuances of the franchise industry. In all a very good experience for me as a buyer through Franchise Resales.
The sale of my business completed in Mar 2011. I engaged franchise resales to sell the business in summer 2009. They were quick to find many prospective purchasers and we had strong interest from the beginning. Gordon came out to meet me and walk around the business and so had done his research well in order to talk about us knowledgably to clients. An offer was accepted in Dec 2009, so I was delighted with the pace of things so far. The time to completion was long due to many factors but none of them down to Gordon. In fact Gordon remained confident and objective throughout – something I came to appreciate and admire. The factors centered mainly on property issues.
I cannot praise Gordon highly enough. Selling your business is very emotional and the most stressful thing I have ever done. I made many a call to Gordon and he continued to answer the phone and be honest and reasonable in his advice, no matter how tough things got or how emotional I got! Due to the nature of the issue it is necessary but hard to find a sounding board who is confidential and impartial and I found that in Gordon. I valued his advice which was always honest and very politely put.
In short, the service was highly professional, a good number of potential and serious buyers came to view the business and once an offer was accepted, Gordon maintained a hand in the progression towards sale, communicating with the various parties involved as necessary. I have absolutely no complaints with the service I received and would recommend Franchise resale and Gordon to anyone. Gordon earned the fee paid on completion more than any other party involved!!
